Whether you’re a first-time buyer or someone looking for your next home, choosing a new house is always a daunting task. After all, a home is usually one of the largest purchases people make. Many people start their search for a new house by creating a list of certain features that they can’t live without, but get lost beyond these initial must-haves. What factors should you look at next? Below are a few tips on how to choose the best home for you…

 

Look beyond the décor – A house’s color and style may not be to your taste, but that shouldn’t deter you. Things like paint color, tiling, etc. can be changed, so make sure to look at the layout or “bones” of the home.

Make sure it’s up to date – Nothing can ruin the excitement of finding a home you love faster than discovering it needs work to make it livable. Before you sign any paperwork, be sure to take a good look at all appliances to make sure they’re in working order and have someone inspect the rest of the house for any possible problems.

Consider furniture – New homes usually mean new furniture, so make sure to leave room in your budget for your new furnishings. If you’re using your current furniture, try to picture it in each home you view and make sure it’s a fit. This can help you narrow down your choices.

Be sure it fits your lifestyle – Do you hate a long commute? Then a house out in the country may not be the one for you, unless you’re willing to make that compromise. Love to cook? Unless you have the money and ability to remodel, that house with the tiny kitchen probably isn’t worth a second look. Take that list of wants from the beginning of your search, then see what you’re willing to compromise on and what are non-negotiable.
