A new exhibition of paintings at the New Canaan Historical Society titled:  In Our Own Backyard – Augustus Smith and Richard Daggy. Augustus Smith (A. S.) Daggy (1858-1942) and Richard Daggy (1892-1973) were father and son.  The exhibit consists oil and watercolor landscape paintings done in and around the area known as Silvermine, CT encompassing Norwalk, New Canaan and Wilton with additional scenes along the Norwalk River and Westport shoreline.  Many of the paintings in the exhibit are for sale with a percentage going to benefit the New Canaan Historical Society. The exhibit compares and contrasts the work of father and son. The energetic post-impressionistic  works by A.S. Daggy and the expressionistic paintings and prints of his son, Richard, share an affection for the energetic use of color and line. Though never members of The Silvermine Group of Artists (An art colony extant from 1908-1922.), A.S. Daggy joined with them as a founding member of the Silvermine Guild in 1922. Richard became a member in 1924 and taught there for many years.
