Your Valuables – Safe or Not!

Your Valuables – Safe or Not!  If you have made the investment in a safe, and secured it properly then you don’t need to read any further.  However if you need some suggestions on where to store your valuables for selling you home or normal day to day living check out these creative safe alternatives.

To make sure that you, your family and your valuables stay safe, The Family Handyman came up with simple places to hide valuables from all but the smartest, most determined thief.  This way your valuables are safe.

1. Hollowed out book
We’ve all seen the hollowed-out book, but there’s not much room in one of these. Instead, use several books with a plywood box attached to the back to make a hidden compartment.

2. Right out in the open
Any common household item that has a cavity such as a vacuum cleaner, old printers, computer towers, children toys, etc. will work. Thieves would not expect that you would leave your belonging out in the open.

3. Buried treasure
Watch your money grow! Roll up some cash, stick it in a medicine bottle or any other watertight container and bury it in a potted plant. It’s likely safe to say that not many burglars are going to be excavating around your houseplants.

4. False bottom drawer
Pick a deep drawer so the depth change won’t be obvious. Cut 1/2 inch plywood 1/16-in. smaller than the drawer opening and rest it on a couple of wood strips that are hot glued to the drawer sides.  Next, hot glue some item you’d expect to find in that drawer so you have a handle to lift the false bottom and reveal your valuables.

5. Cabinet hidden space
Between almost every pair of upper cabinets, there’s a 1/2 inch gap. Take advantage of that gap by hanging a manila envelope containing a whole lot of money.  Hang the cash with binder clips that are too wide to fall through the crack.

6. Counterfeit containers
Go online and type in “secret hiding places” and you’ll be amazed by how many brand-name phony containers are available. If you don’t want to buy one, you can craft a homemade version too. Take a mayonnaise jar and spray paint the interior with cream-colored paint for plastic.

Although a safe deposit box or a properly secured home safe are the most obvious methods for securing your valuables, these ideas give you other options.  Your Valuables – Safe or Not!
